Today I caught a special presentation of The Oprah Winfrey Show. This is one great daytime talkshow which I think should be back on Malaysian television. Instead, all we ever have are these silly reality shows which often show a bunch of crazy people doing outrageous or just plain stupid things. And worst of all, they don't even depict the reality!
Anyways, back to The Oprah Winfrey Show. Today's special edition is about this recent trip Oprah Winfrey made with Elie Wiesel (Nobel Peace Price laureate, Holocaust surviver and author of the book Night ) to Auschwitz. For those who do not know about Auschwitz, it is, or it was rather, the largest concentration camp built by the Nazis during World War II. And as you would have guessed by now, many people died there.
Estimated around 1.1-1.6 million people died there, brutally murdered and tortured. Some even became guinea pigs for hideous experiments, castrated. Victims stripped naked and then brutally murdered in gas chambers. For those who watched Schindler's List will be all too familiar with the scene. Babies killed and then shoved into ovens where they were burnt into ashes.
I could go on and on about the sufferings but I'm not going to do that. It was a touching documentary as they toured around Auschwitz, with the interview and Oprah's narration of the events.
Unbelievable would be the word to describe the atrocities committed. Let's pray that nothing of this sort will ever happen again in the history of mankind. |
